About the Artist: Nickol Ortiz

Nickol Ortiz is a Houston-based artist creating fun and colorful illustrations. After a decade of working as a Registered Dental Assistant, she decided to make a career change and pursue her creative passion by enrolling in UHCL’s Art and Design Program.  In 2024, Nickol received a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a concentration in Graphic Design. Nickol enjoys incorporating various materials in her work, including colored pencil, marker, and digital medium, and enjoys using a bright and colorful palette.  Nickol finds inspiration from everyday life and experiences.

Artist Statement

Happiness comes from our ability to find enjoyment in the day-to-day activities of life.

I create illustrations that are an extension of myself and my daily experiences. I find inspiration in my interactions with others, my pets, and my surroundings. From the mundane, daily activities, to the unusual event or sighting, I enjoy illustrating these fleeting moments as a reminder to appreciate the little things.  I love building connections with others through my art. Hearing the memories and conversations that come from viewing my work is a truly heartwarming experience.

I hope to continue creating work that others can resonate with in their own lives.
